The River Line
Burlington, NJ

Bill and I frequently take mass transit to get from one place to another. A few years ago New Jersey Transit started the River Line, a light rail train from Camden to Trenton and back. It has been a wonderful addition to the mass transit system. We can now stop at various small towns on the Delaware River. The River Line travels right down the middle of Burlington City. It is much easier going by train then worrying about the traffic on Route 130 or 295. This photo Bill took shows the train arriving in downtown Burlington, NJ.

The Mullica's Headwaters
Berlin Township, NJ

This image is a photograph taken at the headwaters of the Mullica in Berlin Township, NJ. I worked in a sepia like color to the picture of trees reflected by water. I then turned the image over so the reflection was now right-side up. My next step was to crop out everything but the reflection. I think it gives the image an impressionistic view.

The Good-bye
Lindenwold, NJ
Bill and I have two different ways of expressing ourselves. One project Bill is working on are a series of shadow images. In this one, he used both of us as models, while he held the camera down to his side and snapped our shadows on the wall at the train station in Lindenwold, NJ.

The Court Jester
Pine Barrens, NJ

This image may be harder to see. On the left is a figure of what I see of a court jester. On the right is an miniature man with his hands in the air that reminds me of the jester's little puppet. Not everyone that has seen our work can see the abstracts as I do. This image was the bark of a shortleaf pine in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. If you are checking out this blog, here's another question for you. Can you see the little man staring out at the photographer.

The Cooper River makes its way from the Delaware through Camden County. This is a view Bill took several years ago looking towards Camden's Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Dogwood Blossoms
Gloucester Township, NJ
During the spring we often spend our time in local nature parks. I've shown photos from Dramesi Park in Gloucester Township, NJ. This one was taken a few springs ago. I've cropped the original image to show these blossoms and I darkened the background. In this picture I really wanted to keep it simple.

Catching the Baby
Pine Hill, NJ

I was very excited yesterday. A role of film I thought was lost finally arrived. I had a tracer started on it and it was found. The reason for being upset was that I had several images of a tree stump that had been removed from a property where they are building a new house in our neighborhood. When I had first taken the photos on a cold winter day, there had been no construction. Not so today and I just looked at the stump it looks different. I decided that I was going to work on this image and see what abstract appeared. Here is "Catching the Baby".

Daffodil
Cape May, NJ

Bill really used the contrast and brightness of Ulead to give this photo a nearly black background. He took the photo on one of our spring trips to Cape May, NJ. For a long time Cape May would hold a tulip festival during the last weekend of April. Beginning in March you can see the various daffodils and tulips shooting up through the ground By the end of April many of the daffodils are gone and only tulips remain, bright and colorful. One year we went to Cape May several weeks earlier then the festival and Bill found this daffodil poking through the fence.

Bench
Azalea Garden
Philadelphia, PA

We have to wait to get through March. I long for the warm breezes and sitting on benches behind the art musuem in Philadelphia. Sometimes we sit and read in the Azalea Garden or walk along Kelly Drive. Warm spring is coming. Can it get here sooner?

Man Worshiping
Pine Barrens, NJ

This is a photograph of pignut hickory bark from the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The original slide had a blue tint to it and some of that was removed with the hue and saturation section of the Ulead program. Even with the blue tint removed enough remained to produce an image of a man worshiping.

Waiting For Take Off
Burlington, NJ

One of Bill's favorite. He and I had a trip to Burlington, NJ on the light rail line. A walk to the park along the Delaware and he saw these 5 gulls waiting in line like jets waiting for take off.

Raindrops

Driftwood Dog On Beach
Atlantic City, NJ
Bill was ahead of me and saw this piece of driftwood first. When our slides returned I mentioned how much this piece of driftwood reminded me of a dog. Bill worked on it creating a black and white background and vibrant red hues reminiscent of an Irish setter.

Sculler
Philadelphia, PA

I've always been interested in Thomas Eakins painting of "Max Schmitt in a Single Scull". I had hoped over the years to capture a similar image in photograph. This is my version of a single sculler opposite Boat House Row. I darkened up the boat houses so that the only the backs of the houses and lone sculler are lit.

Grotesque Man With Wise Owl
Laurel Springs, NJ

I have taken many photographs of dead and live tree roots. This image is at the base of a live tree showing the roots. It was taken at Laurel Lake in Laurel Springs, NJ. In fact, it was taken the same day that I took the image I call "Walt's Lake". If you look carefully at that picture you can see the tree. I used shot a closeup of the roots and then cropped it once more after the slide was copied to the computer. I have decided to put into my man and wood series. Look closely and you should be able to pick out the little man and his owl.

End of Winter, Beginning of Spring
Gloucester Township, NJ
This photo was taken at Dramesi Park in Gloucester Township, NJ, several years ago. We've been back many times. Always finding something to photograph. Last weekend there were 7 ring-necked ducks on the park's pond, two males and a female were there yesterday. Today when I have my camera and a long lens, they were gone. I don't always carry my cameras. Some days I want a break and just be outdoors for the sake of being there. Well spring is "around the corner" and maybe later this afternoon the ducks will be back.

Forsythia
Gloucester Township, NJ

It is coming. Spring and forsythia bushes and warm days are approaching. Bill took this picture of a forsythia bush against the wall of an apartment building. Working with the contrast and brightness and then adding the rich color of a burnt orange he was able to bring out more tecture of the wood and more greens in the bush. The photograph now has a feel of warmth.

Headwaters
Mullica River
Berlin Township, NJ

It was 14 years ago when we were full of energy and got up early to take photos that we decided to try to find the headwaters of the Mullica River. The county map showed that it should have been near Route 73 in Berlin Township, NJ. We drove out Taunton Avenue, stopping to take a photo of part of the river there. We did the same thing off Cooper Avenue. Here we ran into a police officer who asked what we were looking at. We explained about wanting to find the headwaters of the Mullica River but, stopped to see take photos of the pond. There was a lone goose on the pond. He said that the right side of the woods we could follow a little bit along the waters edge but, that if we continued to the County leaf recycling facility, we would be able to walk back to the headwaters. We walked a bit along the right side of the pond and finally returning to our car followed the officer's advise. We found the headwaters.

Man at War
Winslow Township, NJ

We spend a lot of time down at a park in Winslow Township, NJ. We've photographed birds, flowers and other scenics. This picture was of an unopened hawkweed plant. The original image was not quite what I wanted. It was of the three buds yellow and ready to open. I didn't like it. I took my photo and began working more on the darkness and brightness, contrast and I began seeing 3 people. One appears to have a gun. They look like they are in camoulage uniforms. I call it "Man at War".

Walt's Lake
Laurel Springs, NJ
There is a small town in South Jersey, about a mile square. It's Laurel Springs, home to the Whitman-Stafford House. In his latter years, Walt Whitman would come here and spend time visiting friends. Nearby is Laurel Lake which is the North Branch of the Big Timber Creek. I can imagine the great poet coming down to the lake, listening to the birds and the wind, feeling the cool water on his feet and jotting down famous lines of poetry.

Driftwood
Brigantine, NJ
One of the nice things about visiting the shore are the interesting things found while walking. Bill saw this piece of driftwood on Brigantine's beach, in the background the Atlantic City skyline. A chance meeting between nature and photographer.
