The Iridescence of Light
We just got back from lunch and I took another look at "The Iridescence of Light" and tried something new. Here are the two new versions of the picture.
NO. 2
NO. 3

I like No. 3 best. It has a more luminescent quality to it.

The Iridescence of Light
Atlantic City, NJ

As always we walked the beach at Atlantic City, NJ, taking photos of beach scenes including this string of seaweed. At home I took my photo and scanned it with our slide scanner a Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart scanner. With Ulead I began to change the contrast and brighten it. On a whim I inverted the picture and then changed one of the colors to red. Back at the brightness and contrast setting I darkened it more until the seaweed became an iridescence of light.

Life and Boat
Atlantic city, NJ

Atlantic City is full of life. There is the beach, shopping and gambling. Baseball, shows and more shopping. Did I mention the beach? Oh! And food. Gourmet and boardwalk food. Bicycling and swimming. Fishing and boating. A little something for everyone.

Three Blue Umbrellas
Atlantic City, NJ

Outside of the Hilton Bill and I were enjoying a morning walk. I spotted these three umbrellas. They are like sentinels standing guard duty on the beach. Not long after the picture was taken people began to arrive to bath in the South Jersey sunlight.

Odd Stone
Atlantic City, NJ

I found this odd stone on the beach in Atlantic City. It's weight was different then most stones and I wondered at the time if it was man-made. But were the holes also man-made or the work of a sea worm?

Hobie Cats
Atlantic City, NJ
A regatta where there are lots of sails both on the beach and at sea. We were walking along and the colorful sails caught Bill's attention. Mt shots were horrible and I only kept a few. Bill was able to capture lots of color of the boats on land before the race.

Green Seaweed
Atlantic City, NJ
On one of our footsin' trips on the beach in Atlantic City, I found this seaweed that looked like the hair on top of the head of a person in a long robe. Several years before this Bill had found a similar setup. Tomorrow I will put Bill's image on the blog. What I like about scanning it into the computer is the texture that is created when you mix bightness and contrast. Even the treads of shoes show up. It is texture and color that create the image.

Forbes Asterias
Atlantic City, NJ

During one of our footsin' trips in Atlantic City, I came across this starfish. It was the first time I'd seen one closeup and alive. Years ago ill had photograhed one looking down on some rocks in Maine that were under water but, I never saw it that day. I took many shots and today I scanned it in to the computer. I gave it a browner tone to the sand and that brings out the tecture I think. So here today is "Forbes Asterias".

The Wave Watchers
Atlantic City, NJ

I was standing up high when I noticed this mother and her two children at the waters edge in Atlantic Ctiy. It was taken in the early 90's before they built up the dunes. Now you can't see the ocean unless you walk out on a platform. No more walking on the boards and shooting the ocean. There are places like the Taj Mahal that have huge steps leading to patios which still allow you to see down to the ocean. I know why they want the dunes so high. I miss the openess of the beach from the boardwalk. Dunes are the price to be paid for being allowed to live or visit a barrier island.

Clam Shell
Atlantic City, NJ

I've decided that I have become a photographic illustrator. No that's not right either. So what do I call this, computerized or digital photography? By taking my photos and playing with the color or contrast or even the brightness, I feel like I am creating a different art form then photography. I like to see and feel the tecture that I've brought out in these pictures. I've even begun anticipating a change in the original image. I crop, put more warmth into the image, crop again until I see something that I had not imagined when I took the original image. I look forward to it and enjoy it. That's what I did with "Clam Shell".

Whelk
Atlantic City, NJ

The shell was years in the making. Finally after floating along the bottom a wave bounced it onto the beach where I found it and photographed it. The sand and holes in the shell give it a really granny affect. I made it warmer looking. After I was finished with this version I cropped the inside and that is the abstract I showed yesterday.

Driftwood Dog On Beach
Atlantic City, NJ
Bill was ahead of me and saw this piece of driftwood first. When our slides returned I mentioned how much this piece of driftwood reminded me of a dog. Bill worked on it creating a black and white background and vibrant red hues reminiscent of an Irish setter.
