Batsto River
Pine Barrens, NJ
The Batsto River flows east past Lower Forge campground, Quaker Bridge and through Batsto Village. Route 542 passes over it as the river continues to its meeting of the Mullica River where they both merge and enter the Great Bay and the Atlantic Ocean off New Jersey. This image of the river was taken at Batsto Village not far from the worker cottages and sawmill. It can sometimes be a very quiet place or the river can be difficult to paddle as you wind your way around overhanging trees, shallow water and underwater obstacles. The Batona Trail follows much of the river from Batsto Village to Lower Forge Campground. It is one of our special places to visit.

The Mullica's Headwaters
Berlin Township, NJ

This image is a photograph taken at the headwaters of the Mullica in Berlin Township, NJ. I worked in a sepia like color to the picture of trees reflected by water. I then turned the image over so the reflection was now right-side up. My next step was to crop out everything but the reflection. I think it gives the image an impressionistic view.

Waiting For Take Off
Burlington, NJ

One of Bill's favorite. He and I had a trip to Burlington, NJ on the light rail line. A walk to the park along the Delaware and he saw these 5 gulls waiting in line like jets waiting for take off.

Headwaters
Mullica River
Berlin Township, NJ

It was 14 years ago when we were full of energy and got up early to take photos that we decided to try to find the headwaters of the Mullica River. The county map showed that it should have been near Route 73 in Berlin Township, NJ. We drove out Taunton Avenue, stopping to take a photo of part of the river there. We did the same thing off Cooper Avenue. Here we ran into a police officer who asked what we were looking at. We explained about wanting to find the headwaters of the Mullica River but, stopped to see take photos of the pond. There was a lone goose on the pond. He said that the right side of the woods we could follow a little bit along the waters edge but, that if we continued to the County leaf recycling facility, we would be able to walk back to the headwaters. We walked a bit along the right side of the pond and finally returning to our car followed the officer's advise. We found the headwaters.

Water Plants
Long-A-Coming
Berlin, NJ
We went down to the county park in Berlin on a nice spring day. The Long-A-Coming branch of the Great Egg Harbor River meanders through it. At one of the foot bridges that crosses Bill noticied these plants growing on the bottom. Several plants had made it to the top and Bill was able to captur the play of light and the different shades of green.

Looking Toward Ben Franklin Bridge and NJ
Philadelphia, PA

It was the winter of 2003 and we'd had snow and the Delaware River had large chunks of ice floating as the tide moved back and forth. We had to be careful of where we walked as snow was still piled on city sidewalks. Bill and I decided to take the tour of City Hall tower. It was awesome as we looked north up Broad Street then East toward the bridge and NJ. Bill took the above photo by getting real close to the window trying to take out the glare. What a great feeling to look up at the hand on the Billy Penn statue by Alexander Milne Calder. We were so close, the hand so big.

On Frozen Pond, Great Egg Harbor River
New Brooklyn Park, Winslow Township, NJ
There is a park in Winslow Township, NJ, called New Brooklyn Park. The Great Egg Harbor River runs throught it. We've been there in all seasons. Here the ice was just beginning to freeze where the river looks like a pond. Up river beaver had created a dam and the edge of the river overflowed. We have seen eastern bluebirds, American bald eagles, Baltimore orioles, woodchucks and at least one otter on the river. People play ball, fish and canoe. It's a nice place to go to and get away from our busy lives we lead.

The Mullica River

The Mullica River is one of those quiet places found in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Take a path, walk around the sand roads or follow the winding rivers and be at peace with the world.
